Teachers as Agents for Change
Learning to transform the world
In Italy compulsory teaching of civic education was introduced in 2019, with one of three pillars relating to sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030. This is an important milestone for Italian education, even if in the first three years, responsibility of the content and methods of implementation and evaluation of the teaching has been delegated directly to the schools, without any guidance being given to teachers. The various educational, cultural, and structural challenges this responsibility implies for the schools and teachers have been further complicated by the Covid pandemic. Our vision in completing this project is to support schools, teachers and families in grasping the opportunity presented by the law of empowering and inspiring the children to use their voices and act, in a very challenging moment for the school community.
With the goal to enable teachers to transmit the passion, knowledge and importance of the SDGs, thus triggering active citizenship behaviors on the part of young learners, 17 pedagogical/didactic cards have been created, and now made available to thousands of teachers and their students (aged 5-10 years old) through Pearson’s website “kilometro zero”. Each didactic card dives deeply into each of the 17 SDGs – describing the global as well as local context of the goal pertaining to Italy, the disciplines in the classroom which could treat the particular goal transversally and help understand how the children can directly help achieve the goal. The cards go on to suggest external links for further reading and studying on the topic as well as suggest ideas to teachers for the measurement and evaluation of the impact of the activities performed by the students. The education path offered in this project allows for visualizing the topic as transversal across the various subjects taught at school as well as creating and enhancing a dialogue between students, families, schools, and the territory as a whole.
Building on our project The Global Goals Kids Show Italy we reached out to Pearson Italia, a leading publishing and education company, who shares our views regarding the need to support the teachers in this critical moment. Afuture also joined forces with Global Shapers Milano (the Youth arm of the World Economic Forum) who based on their experience from their project Seriously Playing created the activities and bonus activities for each goal.
