Is the world
better off because
your business is in it?

Is the world better off
because your business is in it?

As leaders we face a choice.
We can have transition forced upon us.
Or we can transform with intent.

Afuture is a cross-European-based advisory and community that helps leaders around the world transform their organisations with intent.

This is probably the most inspiring time in our history to be in business. We need to mobilise our great minds and all our companies to do the right thing and do it well. It means to be willing to reimagine the way we work, its purpose and impact as well as what we measure and celebrate. A true long-term competitive advantage is created by making sure your company is purpose-driven and future-fit by embracing the following principles:

Personal transformation first

In the past, leaders could go far by being experts on their companies and industry. But this is no longer enough. We need self-aware leaders with a healthy mindset, who are visionary and able to stretch themselves and their organisations to serve a purpose beyond themselves.

We are part of a bigger whole

A systems thinking perspective enables us to clearly see the opportunities on the transformational journey that we are all part of.  It allows us to ask better questions from a we-and-not-me perspective before jumping to conclusions. And it motivates us to collaborate across conventional borders for a healthy society and for the future of our planet.  Look ahead, look inside, and look around.

Cross Generational

There is deep wisdom in the ancient principle of making decisions that are good for seven generations. There is a great need to integrate cross-generational perspectives to ensure a truly long-term approach to build a sound economic, social and environmental system.

Connecting strategy and culture

Success comes from truly connecting strategy and culture. Culture is the enabler and the energy that engages and moves the whole company in a meaningful direction. It is nurtured by healthy relations and behaviours. When the culture belongs to everyone and is everybody’s responsibility, it unites, and the choice of strategy and action becomes natural, manifesting as impact and results.

What we do

Our purpose is to amplify the private sector’s role to create value for current and future generations, in a holistic and collaborative way. We raise the awareness of leaders and we speed up the creation of future-proof business. We motivate leaders to act and support them and their organisations in all stages of this transformational journey.

Our work can take many forms – from tailored board and management team support and one-on-one coaching to multi-generational awareness initiatives and road map design. Our programs are often built around three interconnected areas:

Illuminate

Transformation starts with awareness. We create a bridge of meaning between where we are now and how we got there. Together we transform active mutual listening and profound observation of reality into generative dialogue. Then we imagine the future we wish to see and identify the models, thinking and behaviours we will need to get there. How big is the gap? What needs to change?

Transform

Within the sustainability-driven transformation that is reshaping business we have a strong focus on the human side, arguing that we won’t capture the opportunities and benefits of frameworks, regulations, methodologies and processes if we are not equipped with the skills and mindsets to use them effectively.

Engage & Sustain

Transformation management isn’t a one and done process, and the go-live isn’t the end of our change journey, it’s the beginning. Through global platforms and networks we amplify the impact towards sector and societal transformation, with an eye to new emerging needs, and with people remaining in constant focus.

The next competitive frontier

DE&I is the biggest contributor for social sustainability. The ‘S’ in ESG (Environment, Social and Governance)  is among the most pressing issues for companies globally, and something that investors and all stakeholders ask about. Everybody talks about it, but few know what to actually do, and even less so how to measure it. That is what we worked on for Be Smart Be Equal.

Why

Factors relating to ‘S’ are among the most pressing issues for companies globally, and something that investors increasingly ask about. Everybody talks about it, but few know what to actually do, and even less so how to measure it.  In Italy, data tells us that initiatives around DI&E (Diversity, Inclusion & Engagement) are rapidly growing in number and impact. Largely thanks to HR. This is great. But this needs to be demonstrated by true leaders throughout the company and a strategic change of culture in order to confront the underlying causes. People are starting to realise this isn’t something you can turn away from or ignore. And it’s not just the business that benefits from a better workplace culture. It’s what the world needs most right now: happy people who leave work and inspire their family, their community. Companies need to rethink their approach and redesign their roadmap. They would serve as great examples and go a long way just by having leaders who really walk the walk and by developing KPIs that capture the rewards from a sound ecosystem between society and company. What if Italian companies could leapfrog into a caring lifework “model” that would impress even the Nordic countries? What can we humbly learn from each other? What can we rediscover? And co-create?

What

Afuture is partner of the initiative Be Smart Be Equal promoted and led by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Our goal is for companies from Italy and the Nordic countries to learn from each other’s best practices and lessons learned, and together elevate and co-create ways to design and live a culture that is good for its people and therefore for business. With courageous and innovative leaders and a value-driven moderator, with experience from board positions in important Italian companies, Afuture developed two highly rated seminars. It was a dynamic and transparent dialogue full of sharing and discussion, rarely seen in Italy, including insights and results from our survey designed to identify the costly and risk filled perception gap – between what a company say they do vs how it plays out, to evaluate the impact of DI&E initiatives.

Who

Afuture developed the webinars together with the Embassies from Denmark, Norway and Sweden, with the support from EWMD (European Women’s Management Development) and the patronage from ASviS. Elena Bonetti, Italy’s minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family, participated in the second webinar.
